Blackwood Football Club has a long and successful history in our Junior grades, having won multiple Girl’s and Boy’s premierships in both the SANFL Juniors and HFL competitions. At the younger years the club emphasises the fun of playing football and the development of the core skills, providing players with an environment that is enjoyable while they learn the skills of Australian Football. The older age groups transition into Premiership football, where the emphasis switches to the competitive nature of the game and the team based environment, while developing player capabilities in multiple positions.
Our mission is to provide an opportunity for local junior members to play at the highest level of football, to experience the highs and lows that team sport brings and to reach their full potential in the best facilities that our club can provide.
Under 7’s – Under 11’s
In this age group, the emphasis is placed on participation and enjoyment. Additional goals are the acquisition of football skills and the nurturing of physical and emotional development and well-being. All players will get equal opportunities for game time and games played over the season.
Juniors – All Grades Under 12+ (Premiership grades)
Teams may play in either HFL or SANFL competition at the discretion of the Executive Committee dependant on the best fit for the club.
During the minor round, players should be guaranteed half a game of football on match day (if selected), and also have the opportunity to play in a variety of positions around the ground throughout the season. It is expected that the emphasis will gradually shift from player enjoyment to commitment to the team and to overall team competitiveness. That shift in emphasis will necessitate greater consistency of positional placement in these years. Additional goals are the acquisition of football skills and the nurturing of physical and emotional development and well-being. Based on skills, ability, attitude, commitment and behaviour the Club’s aim is to give each player the opportunity to participate in a minimum of half the games of the home and away season with the aim of equal game time within these games.
Registrations typically open to the public at the beginning of February, with pre-season starting early March (for the higher grades) or early April (younger grades). Season length is typically 18 Rounds (Hills Football League) and 14 Rounds (SANFL Juniors) beginning in late mid to late April, with bye rounds on the June long weekend, and the middle weekend of the July school holidays. Depending on player numbers, teams are entered in both the HFL and SANFL Juniors competition.
