The Blackwood Football Club A Grade season has finished after going down by five points to Uraidla Districts in Sunday’s Elimination Final at Nairne Oval. Speaking in the rooms post match, coach Ryan Anderson said it was a disappointing results. “We’ve put in so much effort since January this loss today really hurts.”
The Woods made one change welcoming back Brad Jones for his first game in four weeks. Going against the strong breeze in the opening term, the Woods made a positive start having the same scoring shots at the Demons but trailing by five points at the first break. Nick Homburg kicked the first major of the match for the Woods in the ninth minute after a Ryan Dijksman pass from the pocket found him in space 25 metres out.
The Woods made the most of the breeze in the second term kicking four straight goals to turn the five point deficit into a 12 point lead. Phil Hopton hit the scoreboard first kicking a snap goal. When Scott Bricknell kicked a 60 metre goal the Woods had hit the lead. Liam McCarthy and Ben Macreadie kicked additional goals for the Woods as they were able to move the ball with speed and accuracy.
The third quarter proved to be tough as Uraidla pressed hard. The Woods battled hard but costly indiscretions proved vital as it lead to Nick Amato and Harry Allen scoring two majors. Lucky for the Woods, Uraidla kicked two goals eight behinds for the term to keep the Woods in the match at three quarter time only having a seven point advantage. Uraidla got the first goal of the final quarter through clever small forward Oscar Walters. Fighting back in the middle part of the term the Woods drew the margin level with goals to Ryan Dijksman in the ninth minute and Nick Homburg in the seventeenth minute. Blackwood moved the ball forward once again late in the term searching for another goal but the Uraidla defenders held strong to record a five point victory when the final siren sounded and eliminating Blackwood from the finals for the second successive season.
