The Blackwood Football Club would like to announce Jacob Broad as coach of the Senior Colts for the 2020 season. Broad takes on the role as he enters his second season with the Club in a playing capacity, and will take the reigns from current A Grade teammate Matt Waldron.

The 27-year-old says he hopes to further the Club’s commitment to readying its junior players for future senior opportunities.

“I’ve taken up the role to help develop the young lads coming through our Blackwood system, so they can be ready to play Senior footy, whilst also enjoying their last season or two of Senior Colts,” he says.

“Obviously, winning games and playing finals footy is going to be a focus, but another main aim will be to assist the lads in their transition from Senior Colts to Senior Men’s footy.”

Broad brings a host of previous senior playing experience at other HFL clubs – Echunga and Torrens Valley – to the role, and now inherits an Under-18s side that has only finished outside the top three after the minor rounds once in the past seven seasons.

He says he plans to build on the good work done by Waldron and 2019 Assistant Coach Jake Atkinson, who led the team to a Grand Final in 2019, ultimately falling short by 11 points on the day.

“Coaching is something I’ve always wanted to do, and with this talented group, for me it looks to be a great opportunity to give back to grassroots football,” he says.

“Working a little bit with Matty and Jake last year really lit a fire in me, and I’m hoping that benefits me and my transition into building good relationships within the playing group.

“The values I’m hoping to instil within the group are respect, relentlessness, positivity and inclusiveness.

“I’m excited to get on the track and start working with the young men of BFC.”
