The Blackwood Football Club recorded its first defeat of 2019 going down by 12 points to the Echunga Demons in Round 3 of the Mortgage Choice Hills Football League. The Demons made the quick start kicking the first two goals of the match through Joel Aish and Matthew Claughton. Majors to Matt Tuck (x2) and Rhys Sporn saw the Woods take an eleven point lead into the first break.
The second quarter saw the Demons kick four goals to two goals the slope to revert the eleven point quarter time deficit into a four point lead at the major break. With Joel Aish looming large up forward for the Demons they were able to have nine scoring shots for the quarter. The Woods were able to get majors from Ryan Dijksman and Nathanael Dudley during the second term.
Much like the second quarter, Echunga were able to kick four goals to two for the quarter. Big ruck man Sam Cranna got the first major in the second minute being found lose at the top of 50. Further long range goals for the Demons allowed them to extend their lead before goals to Sporn and Dudley saw the margin narrowed just before the final break.
The Woods fought hard in the final quarter kicking three goals to two but it wasn’t enough to pull the margin back before the final siren went. Dijksman kicked two running goals whilst Phil Hopton kicked a long range set shot. Daniel Benson was named best player whilst Brad Jones, Dijksman, coach Ryan Anderson and Nick Homburg also featured in the better players.
