Finals football are here!

This weekend sees the commencement of the 2021 Police Credit Union Hills Football League Division One finals series with the Blackwood Football Club set to feature heavily across all grades.

Qualifying Finals

B Grade

This Saturday sees the Woods B Grade travel to Callington Oval to face the Mt Barker Roos in a Qualifying Final. The two encounters between the sides this season, Mt Barker scored a 26 point victory in Round 2 at home whilst the Woods dominated next clash in Round 11 kicking ten goals to record a 50 point victory.

The match will be a battle of the Woods attack which rates as the second highest scoring offence whilst Mt Barker (lead by veterans Caine Jinnette, Simon Nunan and Simon Williams) will look to curtail that form with their defence being ranked number 2 for lowest points.

Senior Colts

Also on Saturday, the Woods Under 18s travel to Callington to play the Onkaparinga Valley Bulldogs. Finishing second and third on the ladder retrospectively the winner of the match earns the chance to face the Nairne Rams next weekend for a place in the Grand Final.

Blackwood has the number one rated offence across the season averaging 74 PPG whilst ranking second best defensively conceding only 28 PPG. This compares to the Bulldogs who rank seventh in attack and third in defence.

In the previous encounter between the sides in Round 6, the Woods came out firing kicking four goals to none in the first quarter to eventually run out 51-point winners. On the day, Nick Evans booted three majors whilst Michael Thompson was named best player.

Junior Colts

Saturday morning sees the Woods Junior Colts face Uraidla Districts in a Qualifying Final. The match is poised to be a battle of attack and defence with the Woods having the equal number one rated defence in the competition only conceding 19 points per game whilst the Demons rank number one in offence scoring on average 54 points per game.

In the Round 6 encounter between the side, the match was an even affair at quarter time with one goal each way. After quarter time the Woods stepped on the accelerator scoring eight goals to two to record a 37 point win at the final siren. Up forward, eight individual players kicked a goal with Josh Steer lead the way up booting two majors whilst Joshua Payne, Jay Burton, Spencer Warrilow, Tyson Kershaw and Dylan Willis being named best players.

Elimination Finals

This Sunday sees the side travel to Lobethal Oval to face the Onkaparinga Valley Bulldogs is an elimination final with the winner keeping the season alive whilst the loser draws curtains on their campaign.

The match will only be the fourth time the sides have met in the post-season since 2006 with previous matches all in semi-finals in 2006, 2007 and 2020. In the semi-final at Uraidla Oval in 2020, Evan Johnson led the way with a best on ground performance booting four majors as the Woods ran over the top of the Bulldogs in the second half to record a 57-point victory.

In the only match between the sides in 2021, the Woods were hampered by injuries as the Bulldogs registered 25 scoring shots to only 12 for the Woods to record a 53-point victory. Matt Tuck was awarded best player for Blackwood whilst Jak Baldissera and Phil Hopton kicked two goals each.

Mini Colts

This Sunday our Mini Colts side faces Uraidla Districts in the 2021 Elimination Final with the winner to keep their season alive. Across the season, the young Woods have the third ranked offence (38 PPG) and third ranked defence (21 PAGG) compared to the Demons who average 23 PPG and 37 PAPG.

In the only match between the sides for the season, the Woods managed to kick 12 goals from 23 scoring shots whilst only conceding one goal for entire match. On the say Mitch Daniell, Jaxon Moody and Hayden Wheatland combined for seven majors with Jaxon Moody being named best player.
