The Blackwood Football Club Open Women’s side has record a successful start to Season 2021 defeating the Flinders University Football Club by 18 points in brisk conditions on Friday evening.

Speaking post match coach Darren Cock said it was a positive start to the season. “Flinders University have a very strong side having not lost a game in nearly two years and taking out the premiership last season.”

“It was a great performance considering we are playing in a new competitions and their are several players who still qualify to play in the juniors competition.”

The match was the first time the side have played in the Adelaide Football League with the Woods also feeling a second side in the Police Credit Union Hills Football League Women’s competition.

The Woods welcomed seven new players into the red and green with Tyler Attiwill, Lili Christophers, Jamie Lunn, Lauren Payne, Kirsten Priess, Gretel Ramsey and Bridie Stouppos making their debuts.

In brisk conditions at Flinders University sporting grounds, it took till the second quarter for the opening goal of the match by the Woods. In a tight defensive game, the Woods kept the ball on the inside scoring their second goal in the third quarter to lead by five points at three quarter time.

Finishing the final quarter full of run, the Woods booted 2.2 for the quarter whilst keeping Flinders Uni to only one behind to run out 18 point winners at the final siren.

Beth Sigley was named best player on the ground for her solid performance whilst Gretel Ramsey, Harsimrat Dhaliwal, Micaela Collins and Bridie Stouppos also featured in the better players on the day.

Next weekend sees the Woods face Salisbury Football Club at Blackwood Oval on Saturday afternoon whilst the HFL girls kick off their season against Ironbank on Sunday afternoon
