A Grade

The Woods made one change from the previous weekend welcoming Moe Milsom for this first A Grade match since 2018. The Bulldogs made a quick start with speedy half forward kicking the opening two majors of the match. The Woods got a reply late in the term through Rhys Sporn who snapped the ball over his left shoulder straight through the middle.

Coach Anderson urged his players to dig deep at the first break. “We have weathered the storm they have thrown at us, now we must take the momentum and control the match.” Youngster Issac McCormick got the opening goal of the second term through exceptional forward pressure of the Woods saw a turnover effected. Onkaparinga Valley continued to make the play kicking the next two of the match through big man Terry Sleep and Mayo with his third of the match.

Woods big man Jan Warbout started to get the upper hand in the ruck in middle part of the term which allowed the Woods to gain control of the match and kick the next six goals of the match. Winger Evan Johnson asserted himself on the match booting three long range goals whilst Troy Hocking, Matt Tuck and Anderson all hit the scoreboard with a goal to captain Ryan Dijksman right on the half time break saw the Woods turn the quarter time deficit into a 21 point half time lead.

Both sides continued to go toe-for-toe at the start of the third quarter with Andy Vines registered the first goal of the ‘premiership’ quarter. With the Woods losing star forward Joel Aish to injury in the opening term, they were continuing to find other avenues to goal. McCormick, Dijksman, Anderson and Liam McCarthy all impacted the goals in the term and the Woods were allowed to move the ball with speed and skill through the middle part of the ground.

The Bulldogs threw the magnets around at the start of the final term searching for answers. Bulldogs captain Ben Jefferies got the first goal of the final term snapping the ball through the middle after the Bulldogs won the forward line stoppage. The Woods got the immediate reply through Dijksman as he swooped a loose ball to snap it towards the goals with the wind helping it drift through the middle. With injuries beginning to mount for the Dogs, The Woods ran out the match with three further goals to McCarthy, Johnson and Ben Macreadie to run out 57 point winners and continue their 2020 season.

Evan Johnson was awarded best player for the Woods kicking a season high four majors whilst Matt Tuck, James Catford, Nathan Dunn and Rhys Sporn all earnt the praise of the coaching staff being awarded at the better players on the day.
