The lads from Coromandel formed a football team in 1882. They played at Chambers Flat, changed the name, and so the Blackwood Football Club (BFC) was born.

In 1912, Sturt League Football Club started a district football competition called the Sturt Football Association. In 1920, BFC joined the Mid-Southern Football Association. From 1931 to 1948 the club played in the Glenelg District Football Association.

In the late 1930s home games were moved to Hewett Sports Ground. Premierships were first won by the A-grade in 1938 and the B-grade in 1947. Throughout those formative years, family names such as Jones, Watchman, , Wade, Winn and Moulden were club members.

Those familiar names are involved in the club to this day, emphasising the club’s strong local community involvement.

The club played in the Sturt District Football Association from 1949 to 1952, winning A-grade premierships in 1950 and 1952, before joining the Glenelg South West Football Association in 1953. Premierships were won in 1953, 1954, 1955 with further successes in 1967, 1969, 1980 and 1983. Blackwood also won the A2 premiership in 1976.

BFC moved to the Blackwood Hill Oval and club rooms in 1978. A decade later the club transferred to the Hills Football League where it competes today. It has won many junior premierships and enjoyed success in the A-grade in 1988, 1991 and 2017. The club participated in the first season of the Women’s Football Program. The Seniors have been very successful over the past years winning back to back Premierships in 2023/2024. The growth has been amazing because the club continues to embrace a One Club philosophy. It has grown to include 24 teams, 472 players and more than 800 members and supporters.
