They’ve done it. Our Under 16s Girls are champions for 2018. Having played three across the season the Woods had not beaten the Mitcham Hawks to date in season 2018. The team faced some mid week headaches with several players booked to go on a ski-trip at the start of the weekend. Coach Damien Venning didn’t let this get in the way of the job at hand, come up with a game plan if executed which could beat the Mitcham side.

The Woods girls got away to the perfect start keeping the Hawks scoreless in the opening half whilst kicking 15 points themselves. With a handy lead, the Woods then shut the game down employing a solid defensive strategy to keep themselves in the lead until the final siren. Coach Venning reflected after the match saying it was a great team performance. “The most pleasing thing to the coaches was the way the team played together. They followed the plan to perfection and executed a clinical performance.”

“Some players had to forfeit their own personal game for the sake of team to do a role and what a job they did. I am so very proud of everyone in the team. It’s a great achievement.”

At the after match presentation, Zoe Venning was awarded the best on ground for her staring performance around the midfield. Other players to feature in the better players were: Taylah Jayne, Scarlett Griffiths, Rylee Jozwa and Miki Collins.

Under 14s

Whilst it was jubilation in the Under 16 ranks, the Under 14s fell short of claiming the ultimate prize going down by two points to the Henley Sharks. Taking it right up to the strong Henley side who had only lost one match for the season, the young Woods were in the match until the final siren. You have make the club, your parents and coaches proud for the efforts you have put in all season.
